WSUS server serving wsusContent; local vs remote.

Ah yes, you have had enough of it. Wsus content folder keeps growing in size day by day. You have tried feeding it 20 GB, then another 50, then 100 GB. No, it won’t stop growing and keeps demanding more and more space.

No worries, there is a solution for that… Maybe… in any case as gecko says ” 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on”  of your valuable disk space on your (v)SAN storage

Solution 1)  Have workstation download updates from MS directly

  1.  Downside; traffic, bandwidth, time, multiple unknown variables on how long, amount of bandwidth, cost of bandwidth
  2. To Do:
    1. Set your workstations to report statistics and  detect updates to your internal SUS Server:

detect updates and report statistics wsus
detect updates and report statistics wsus
    2. Choose an option to “Do not store update files locally; computers install from Microsoft Update”

Solution 2) Download to sus server, only what you need

  1. Don’t download the “Express installation files”; downside is it will take longer for workstations to get the necessary updates
  2. To Do:
    1. Check mark “Download update files to this server only when updates are approved”
    2. Uncheck the “Download express installation files”

Download update files to this server only when updates are approved
Download update files to this server only when updates are approved

Solution 3) Download updates to a separate drive on the SUS server, enable de-duplication on the drive. (Available with Windows server 2012 and 2016)

  1. To Do:
    1. Re-Point the wsusContent to a separate drive
    2. Check mark “Download update files to this server only when updates are approved”
    3. Uncheck the “Download express installation files”
    4. Install “Data Deduplication” role under Server Roles, and then “Configure data deduplication” on the non-system disk with in Server Manager.
      1. data Deduplication role
        data Deduplication role

configure Data Deduplication Windows 2012 R2
configure Data Deduplication Windows 2012 R2

      2. configure Data Deduplication Schedule
        configure Data Deduplication Schedule
